Welcome to the June 2024 updates of Freewheeling Kiwi

The last month has seen me revisiting some delightful walks in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty all the while reflecting on what a hiker’s paradise New Zealand is.

Spurred on by those experiences, I’ve planned a series of Micro-Adventures for the coming months. It’s a delicate balance of what is practical and safe in winter while maintaining strength and fitness ready to return to Nepal to hike in their autumn.

Below I share the first of those micro-adventures - a solo overnight trip to the beautiful Waitawheta Valley and Hut.

As well, there’s my recommendations on which Brands to go to for backpacks and hiking shoes.

My big project for the month has been to produce a comprehensive A to Z Guide for the Everest Base Camp Trek, this was a massive undertaking and I’m thrilled to now share it with you.

Winter Micro Adventures

The first of my winter micro adventures was a solo overnight trip into the stunning Waitawheta Valley near Waihi.

I’ve visited the lower gorge before however this was my first time to stay at the Waitawheta Hut which I thoroughly enjoyed.
