• Preparations are well under way for my first thru hike, Te Araroa, a four month wander the length of New Zealand. In this letter, I give some detail on the logistics of food resupply as well as plans to canoe part of the walk - is that even allowed?

Te Araroa - Preparations

Preparations are well under way for this epic adventure!

Early Spring 2023 will see myself and Andrew at Cape Reinga ready to embark on our 3,000 kilometre (1,864 mile) walk to Bluff. Te Araroa is different from other traditional back-country tramping tracks as not only do you walk, there’s also sections that can be biked, kayaked and canoed.

Trail Food

We’ve committed to preparing as much of our own non-perishable food as we can and will be relying on re-supply or bounce boxes sent to designated pick up points along the way.

As well as food, the boxes may contain other items such as extra gear, extra clothing, toiletries and other things we may need further down the track.

With the anticipated through hike taking 120 days, we’ll need a combined 720 meals plus snacks and for someone who enjoys their cup of tea, we’ll need nearly 1,000 teabags!

There’s plenty of experimentation and fine tuning going on with the food, this is a curry beef mince with vegetables which we enjoyed on the historic Waiorongomai Trail.

Does canoeing on a thru hike even count?

Te Araroa includes the option to canoe the Whanganui River from Whakahoro all the way to Whanganui, or parts there of, spending several days on the water and stopping at designated campsites alongside the river.

This is our preferred option, the alternative being a mixture of canoe or jet-boat and then walk or bike the River Road.

The Whanganui River is part of New Zealand’s “Great Walks” network and will be an absolute highlight of the trip.

I've never finished a thru hike 🥾

In this video, I share my motivation to walk Te Araroa which is considered one of the toughest thru hikes in the world due to it’s varied terrain and the weather that you’re likely to encounter along the way. 

Added to that are several hundred river crossings, lots of mud, days between resupply points, numerous mountain passes, sandflies, wasps, miles of road walking, poorly maintained tracks and, yes I could go on.

So why? Why would I leave a perfectly comfortable lifestyle to endure all of that?
