Welcome to the July 2024 updates of Freewheeling Kiwi

This past month’s huge indoor project has been to complete the entire Te Araroa Trail Blog, a daily snapshot of over 133 days on the trail.

Completing this series has brought back many great memories of what was an epic adventure and I do hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it.

My Winter Micro Adventures continue and featured in this Newsletter are overnight visits to the Jumbo Hut in the Tararua Forest Park as well as the Pinnacles Hut in the Coromandel Forest Park.

I share my recommendation for toe socks. Yes, there really is such a thing and they carried me all the way from Cape Reinga to Bluff!

On the main blog, I have continued with the Kathmandu Snapshot series. This month’s feature is the Pashupatinath Temple Complex. If you’ve ever wondered how soap was “discovered”, be sure to read this one, the answer will surprise you 😲.

Te Araroa Trail Blog

Prior to starting Te Araroa I had planned to Blog daily however once on Trail I very rapidly established that was simply not going to be practical.

I did keep my daily Vlog schedule posting for over 133 days to the Freewheeling Kiwi social media channels including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X and Threads.

While on trail, we tracked every day using Strava and Garmin and have since used those combined GPX files to create MyMaps which add a wonderful visual component to the Blogs. 

Now after many weeks of work, Te Araroa Trail Blog Series is complete. Here you’ll find a snapshot to each day based around the daily Vlogs and MyMaps.

The Blogs are not intended as a “how to” walk Te Araroa, more as a daily overview of an epic adventure.

Tararua Forest Park

It was with great excitement that we returned to the Mount Holdsworth area in the Tararua Ranges. On our last visit we hammock camped and knew then we’d be returning to explore the area more.

Coromandel Forest Park

Coromandel Peninsula is delightful and the Pinnacles track is a particular favourite of mine. I was thrilled to return once again to the Pinnacles Hut, having last spent a night there over twenty years ago with my then ten year old son son, Carlton.
