๐ŸŒ„ Lessons from the Red Heart of Australia

The Larapinta Trail is a place that both tests and transforms you, where every step across the red earth reminds you of natureโ€™s power and your own resilience. Out here, preparation isnโ€™t just practical, itโ€™s essential. It allows you to move with confidence, to stay safe, and to truly connect with the land around you.

Living in a country as wet and green as New Zealand, itโ€™s easy to forget how serious fire danger can be. Yet when we walked the 3,000 km Te Araroa โ€” especially through the dry Canterbury sections โ€” we saw firsthand how real that risk is. The lessons shared in this Larapinta Guide apply just as much to hiking at home in New Zealand as they do in Australiaโ€™s Red Centre.

In this monthโ€™s story, Iโ€™m sharing key insights and safety tips for anyone heading outdoors this season โ€” because adventure isnโ€™t only about the trail you take, but how you prepare for it.

Outdoor Survival and Fire Safety Guide - Larapinta Trail

The Larapinta Trail is an incredible adventure and one that I thoroughly enjoy and recommend! But itโ€™s also rugged, remote and fire-prone, especially in the hotter months from October through to March.

So as to take advantage of the cooler day time temperatures, we hiked the Larapinta Trail in June which is during the Australian winter. Fortunately we had no exposure to active bushfires though the threat of them in this area is not to be underestimated. There were many days on trail when we navigated through areas that had previously been burnt out and the threat of a fast approaching, out of control bushfire does not bear thinking about.

Since youโ€™ll be heading into Australiaโ€™s Red Centre where temperatures soar and bushfires are a real threat, your planning needs to be airtight.
