Annapurna Base Camp Trek Tips
With years of experience trekking to Annapurna Base Camp, we know the insider tips to make your journey safe, comfortable and unforgettable.
Here are our essential tips to help you plan a smooth and memorable trek:
Choose the best season: Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November) offer clear skies, stunning mountain views, and the best trekking conditions.
Walk at your own pace: Don’t rush. Check your body regularly and inform your guide if you feel unwell.
Pack wisely: Bring warm jackets, rain gear, and sun protection, as Himalayan weather can be unpredictable.
Train before trekking: Even though the trail is non-technical, cardio, hiking, and strength exercises will make the trek easier and more enjoyable.
Drink safe water: Carry a refillable water bottle and use purification tablets or filters, since tap water isn’t always safe.
Know the route: Familiarise yourself with trail conditions. We arrange everything, but a little preparation helps ensure a smoother journey.
Stay connected: Network and Wi-Fi can be unreliable in the mountains. Buying a local SIM card in Kathmandu helps you stay connected.
Carry cash: ATMs are rare on the trail. Withdraw enough cash in Kathmandu or Pokhara before starting the trek.
Respect local customs: Dress modestly, greet locals with “Namaste,” and show kindness—it goes a long way in the mountains.
Bring power backup: Electricity is limited along the trail, so carry a portable power bank for your devices.
Trek responsibly: Avoid single-use plastics, carry your rubbish, and help keep the Annapurna Base Camp route clean.
Following these tips will ensure a safer, more enjoyable, and truly unforgettable Annapurna Base Camp trek. Himalayan Recreation will guide you every step of the way.

Know Before You Go
The best time to Trek to the Annapurna Base Camp in 2026
The Trek to Annapurna Base Camp can be completed at any time of the yea, however, there are times when it is considered best to embark on an Annapurna trek.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is one of the best times for trekking in Nepal. It is a great time to trek to Mount Annapurna Base Camp. The weather is pleasant during this time of the year, which is not too hot or cold.
The flowers start blooming, making the trail colourful and beautiful. The views of the mountains are also usually clear and stunning. It is comfortable and convenient to trek in the spring. However, the trail can be busy during this time.
Summer/Monsoon (June to August)
Summer brings the monsoon season to the Annapurna region. It is not the ideal time for trekking because of the challenges and risks it involves. You can expect a lot of rain during this time of the year, which makes the trail muddy and slippery.
The views of the mountains are not visible mostly in summer, as the weather is likely to be cloudy, obstructing the mountain views. However, the landscapes become green and lush, and there are fewer trekkers on the trail.
Autumn (September to November)
Autumn is also one of the best times to trek to Annapurna Base Camp. The weather is clear and stable, with moderate temperatures during this time of the year.
The skies are usually blue, offering spectacular views of the mountains. It is considered the best time to capture the best sights of the mountains.
Winter (December to February)
Winter is not an ideal time to complete the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, as it is a challenging time to trek due to the extreme cold and snow. The temperatures can drop below freezing, and the trail can be covered in snow during this time of the year.
However, if you are well-prepared and have experience trekking in winter conditions, you can expect to have a peaceful time trekking. The views of the snow-covered mountains are breathtakingly beautiful during this time.

No prior multi-day trekking experience is required. Good general fitness is enough, and many first-time trekkers join my groups. I provide guidance on training, gear, and preparation to help you feel ready.
-
You’ll need an ACAP permit and a TIMS card for trekking in the Annapurna region. These are all arranged for you in Nepal—you don’t need to prepare anything in advance.
-
We stay in family-run tea houses that offer basic but clean twin-share rooms. You can request to share with another woman if you prefer. Most places have shared bathroom facilities and hot showers available for a small fee.
-
Your trip includes all accommodation, meals while trekking, qualified Nepali guides, porter support, permits, all Nepal-side transfers, and my personal support every step of the way; before, during, and after the trek. A complete inclusions list is provided once your application is accepted.
-
International flights, travel insurance, snacks, drinks, gear, and tipping for guides and porters are not included. I provide a full list of additional costs so nothing takes you by surprise.
-
Daytime temperatures are usually comfortable for hiking, but nights can drop below freezing at higher elevations. I provide a detailed packing list so you bring the right layers to stay warm and comfortable.
-
Many women trek during their cycle without any issue. Bring your preferred products, a small zip pouch for discreet disposal, and anything you normally use for comfort. I include tips in the pre-trip guide so you feel prepared and supported.
-
What gear do I need to bring?
You’ll need trekking boots, warm layers, a good sleeping bag, trekking poles, and a comfortable daypack. You’ll receive a full gear guide (including women-specific recommendations) after booking. Many items can also be rented or purchased in Kathmandu.
-
Tea houses have simple, shared bathrooms. While basic, they are clean and functional. Bring personal hygiene items like wipes, sanitiser, and a small toiletry kit. I provide a women-focused packing list to help you feel comfortable on the trail.
-
Tea houses serve warm, nourishing meals: dal bhat, noodle dishes, soups, rice, curries, vegetables, eggs, and more. Vegetarian options are always available, and portions are generous.
-
Yes—vegetarian, dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegan diets can be accommodated in most tea houses. Please let me know your needs during the application process..
-
Porters carry your main bag (up to 10 kg). You only walk with a daypack containing water, snacks, layers, and your essentials. This makes the trek far more comfortable and accessible.
-
The altitude on this trek is moderate, but we still take it seriously. We ascend gradually, stay hydrated, and monitor everyone closely. Safety is always the priority.
-
Yes, most tea houses offer hot showers for a small fee. I’ll let you know the best days to shower and what to bring to stay warm afterwards.

Yes, charging is available in most tea houses for a small fee. A power bank is recommended for higher elevations or busy lodges.
-
The itinerary has built-in flexibility for weather shifts. Our guides know the region extremely well and make safe, informed decisions if conditions change.
-
If a trekker cannot continue, a guide or porter will accompany them to a safe point or back to the trailhead. The rest of the group continues with the itinerary.
-
Yes. All trekkers must have travel insurance that specifically covers trekking up to 4,130 metres and includes medical evacuation. This is essential for safety and peace of mind.
-
I keep groups intentionally small—usually 6–10 trekkers so everyone receives personal support and a more connected experience. Small groups also mean safer travel and a closer connection with the trail, the culture, and each other.
-
To join the 2026 group trek, you’ll first submit an application directly to me. This allows me to ensure the trip is the right fit for your goals, experience, and fitness level. Once accepted, I’ll guide you through payments, preparation, and everything you need before departure.

Hundreds of dove grey pigeons fluttered up, stirred into action by a uniformed man waving his arms and shooing at them only to settle the moment his back was turned. The pigeons resumed eating the grain being tossed to them by a tourist, these were the true city dwellers, capable of adaptation wherever they went. Cooing softly amongst themselves, they ignored the pilgrims prostrating themselves before the enormous white domed Boudhanath Stupa.
