Milford Track Weather: What to Expect in Every Month of the Great Walk Season

Clinton River, Milford Track, New Zealand Great Walks

If you've secured a Milford Track booking, congratulations. You've already overcome one of the biggest hurdles.

Now comes the next question: what sort of weather can you expect? The answer, quite simply, is almost anything.

Located in the heart of Fiordland National Park, the Milford Track passes through one of the wettest regions in New Zealand. Rainfall is measured in metres rather than millimetres, and weather systems can transform the landscape in a matter of hours.

Many first time walkers worry about rain ruining their experience. Yet after walking the track myself, I'd argue the opposite. While sunshine delivers spectacular mountain views, rain is what gives Milford much of its character. Waterfalls explode from seemingly every cliff face, the rainforest glistens, and the valleys take on an almost mystical atmosphere.

Understanding what conditions are typically like throughout the Great Walk season can help you prepare, but one thing remains true no matter which month you choose: Fiordland likes to keep you guessing.

The Biggest Milford Track Weather Myth

Many people assume there must be a "best" month to walk the Milford Track.

The reality is that every month during the Great Walk season offers its own advantages. More importantly, no month guarantees sunshine and no month guarantees rain.

Because the Milford Track operates on a strict hut quota system, the number of walkers remains fairly consistent throughout the season. Unlike some hiking destinations, you're not choosing a month to avoid crowds. Instead, you're choosing what sort of weather, daylight hours, and seasonal scenery you'd most like to experience.

The secret to enjoying Milford isn't finding the perfect forecast. It's arriving prepared for whatever Fiordland decides to deliver.

October: Spring Awakens

October marks the start of the Great Walk season.

Winter snow may still dust the surrounding mountains, creating a dramatic contrast between the lush green valleys and the alpine peaks above. Waterfalls are often flowing strongly after months of winter precipitation, and the landscape feels fresh and vibrant.

Expect:

  • Cool temperatures

  • Snow on surrounding peaks

  • Strong flowing waterfalls

  • Highly changeable weather

For photographers, October can be particularly rewarding thanks to the combination of snow capped mountains and spring greenery.

November: Lush and Vibrant

November brings longer daylight hours and some of the most vivid colours of the season.

The rainforest is thriving, birdlife is active, and temperatures begin to feel more comfortable for walking. Conditions remain variable, but many walkers find November strikes a pleasant balance between spring freshness and summer warmth.

Expect:

  • Mild daytime temperatures

  • Lush rainforest scenery

  • Active birdlife

  • A mix of sunshine and rain

December: The Start of Summer

As summer arrives, daylight stretches well into the evening and temperatures continue to rise.

December often provides excellent walking conditions, although Fiordland remains perfectly capable of delivering several days of rain without warning.

Expect:

  • Long daylight hours

  • Warmer temperatures

  • Green valleys and active waterfalls

  • Unpredictable weather patterns

The extended daylight makes this a particularly enjoyable time for photography around the huts and along the track.

January: Peak Summer

January is typically one of the warmest months on the Milford Track.

Long days and comfortable temperatures make for enjoyable walking conditions, but don't be fooled into thinking summer means dry weather. Significant rain events can occur at any time of year.

Expect:

  • Warm temperatures

  • Long daylight hours

  • Excellent visibility during fine spells

  • Persistent sandflies around huts and rest areas

On clear days, January often delivers some of the most spectacular mountain views of the season.

February: Summer Continues

February is often regarded as one of the most reliable months for walking in Fiordland.

Temperatures remain warm, daylight hours are still generous, and there can be some wonderfully settled periods of weather.

Of course, this is Fiordland, so rain is never far away.

Expect:

  • Comfortable temperatures

  • Good visibility during fine weather

  • Warm days and pleasant evenings

  • The possibility of heavy rain at any time

For many walkers, February offers an ideal balance of warmth and mountain visibility.

March: A Photographer's Favourite

March is one of my favourite months in Fiordland.

The days are still reasonably long, temperatures remain comfortable, and the quality of light often feels softer than the height of summer. Clear mornings can reveal spectacular views of the surrounding peaks, while changing weather conditions create dramatic opportunities for photography.

Expect:

  • Comfortable walking temperatures

  • Crisp mornings

  • Beautiful photography conditions

  • Variable weather patterns

If you're carrying a camera, March can be particularly rewarding.

April: The Season Winds Down

April marks the final month of the Great Walk season.

Temperatures begin to cool, daylight hours shorten, and hints of winter start to appear in the surrounding mountains. Fresh snow occasionally returns to higher elevations, adding another layer of drama to the landscape.

Expect:

  • Cooler mornings and evenings

  • Shorter daylight hours

  • Increasingly crisp conditions

  • Occasional early winter weather

For those who enjoy dramatic mountain scenery, April can be a beautiful time to experience Fiordland.

What Happens When It Rains?

This is the question that concerns most walkers.

The truth is that rain is part of the Milford Track experience.

When the rain arrives:

  • Waterfalls multiply dramatically

  • The rainforest glows with life

  • Mist drifts through the valleys

  • Rivers surge through the landscape

  • The scale of Fiordland becomes even more apparent

Heavy rain can occasionally cause transport delays or track disruptions, but these situations are carefully managed by DOC with walker safety as the priority.

Many walkers arrive hoping for sunshine and leave talking about the day it rained.

Waterfalls that were a trickle the day before become something that stops you in your tracks. MacKay Falls, Milford Track — after rain.

Essential Weather Preparation Tips

No matter when you walk the Milford Track:

  • Pack quality waterproof rainwear

  • Use dry bags or a pack liner

  • Carry warm layers, even in summer

  • Protect electronics from moisture

  • Prepare for changing conditions every day

The walkers who enjoy Milford weather the most are rarely the luckiest. They're usually the ones who arrive prepared.

So When Is the Best Time to Walk?

There isn't a single answer.

October offers snow capped peaks and powerful waterfalls.

November brings vibrant spring growth.

December, January, and February provide longer days and warmer temperatures.

March delivers beautiful light and excellent photography opportunities.

April offers cooler conditions and a hint of the approaching winter season.

The best month is ultimately the one you've managed to secure a booking for.

Because on the Milford Track, the weather isn't simply something you endure. It's part of what makes the experience unforgettable.

And whether you walk beneath blue skies or through drifting Fiordland mist, you'll come away with a deeper appreciation for one of New Zealand's most remarkable landscapes.
